In defense of a champion of tolerance, against the smear campaigns.
Gandhi is a rock star! A foolish criticism of Gandhi is that he wasn’t supportive of Africans when he was a young man in South Africa and made disparaging statements — which he recanted in his older years. You learn as you age, as he did. An even more foolish criticism concerns his testing of his celibacy — a poor choice, but a consensual one, and, check the notes, nothing happened. And now he’s a tyrant? It’s a smear campaign, because he championed rights for minorities, including Muslims — and the current political idiocy in India is to smear his name because he had compassion for non-Hindus. It’s sad that this short-sighted view has been pushed for political reasons.
