People are more religious than they believe themselves to be.
Spirituality — or spiritualism — is just like any other religion. Ever heard of a Christian criticizing a Muslim? Same principle. Even activism is a religion by definition: a specific, fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects. People are more religious than they believe themselves to be — stigma just gets in the way. And sometimes it isn’t a problem of religion, or ideology, or belief systems in any form. It’s just people being assholes.
A spiritual journey embraces all aspects of life — not just those that are “positive” or “negative.” It embraces both. This allows you to see the inherent oneness and unity of all things. (Some may describe that as coming from an LSD or ayahuasca trip, but it’s still true.)

Missionaries and proselytizers created psychic impediments to understanding and actualizing ancient belief systems by making people believe myths and allegory to be true history. They created a matrix for them — an illusion.
